ciircee: (Hold on to me)

Ahahaha…I totally forgot what it was that I wanted to write for today! And my connection has been really sporadic for the last few days as well, so I've spent a lot of time trying to get my computer to connect. I'm apologizing right now if this sucks! I'm not really good at Kingdom Hearts since I've only watched Edward play the games—and I know I've missed parts of it. Timeline wise, this takes place after the end of KH2—but I don't know that there are any real spoilers. Still, I like the title of this one—I think it really fits (not something I can say about a lot of my titles, I think!).

Goose-eggs from Playing

The noise that woke Sora was faint—something he'd never have noticed under the sound of the breeze and the ocean before he'd left home. One day, he thought, it would go back to being that way. But it was his first night back home and so he woke. "Huh?" he asked sleepily, sitting up and looking around his room.

"Shit," somebody swore quietly.

"Riku?"

"Yeah," Riku answered and Sora finally picked him out in the deepest shadows his room had to offer, betrayed by the moonlight on his hair. "Didn't mean to wake you."

Sora rubbed his hair out of his eyes and blinked. "What's wrong?"

In the shadows, Riku shifted in what could have been a shrug. "Nothing."

"Really?" Sora asked skeptically.

"Yeah, really," Riku said and something about the movement of the shadows suggested that Riku had just folded his arms.

Pushing his blankets aside, Sora swung his legs out of bed, facing Riku more fully. "Really, really?"

"Yes, really really."

"Are you sure?" Sora asked, propping his elbows on his knees and his chin in his hands.

"Sora!"

"Because it's the middle of the night and you're in my room and you won't come out of the darkness," Sora said.

"Will too," Riku said tetchily, edging into the moonlight in the middle of the room. "I just came over because I couldn't sleep. Nothing is wrong."

"Then…" Sora tapped his cheek, "then what's the matter, huh?"

Caught in the light of the moon, Riku stiffened. His keyblade hand twitched, as though looking for Way to the Dawn. But he didn't say anything.

"Riku? What's the matter? It's okay. You can tell me, Riku. It'll be all right," Sora said, finally getting out of bed and going to him. "Honest."

"You…Sora, you dummy," Riku said, his voice harsh.

Sora froze. He stared at Riku uncomprehendingly. "Huh?"

And then Riku made a sound—something that was almost a laugh, but wasn't. It wasn't a sniff and wasn't a sigh but neither quite a cough nor a groan, either. It was the sound that had woken him, though. "You're so stupid, Sora," Riku said in a tight, high voice. "You're so dumb."

"Well, so are you," Sora said, unfreezing. "You're really stupid too."

"You came after me," Riku said. "You stayed and you looked and you didn't give up and you're so stupid because—"

"Because you're my best friend," Sora said when Riku sucked in a breath. "There was no way I was gonna go home without you."

Riku's face was shining, the flickering shadow of Sora's curtains doing nothing to dispel the image of tears dripping down his cheeks. "I betrayed you," Riku hissed.

Sora shook his head. "No way! I'm never gonna believe it, Riku. I know you didn't! The Darkness tricked you."

"Stupid," Riku repeated, the word catching strangely. Like he was cold. Or crying. Or both.

"And you tricked it back," Sora said. He put his arms around Riku awkwardly. It was nearly as strange and disconcerting as hugging Kairi had been. "You helped me all the way. Even when you fought me, and I fought you, you helped me. Because you were Riku—so I couldn't give up."

Riku's arms jerked up and closed around him tightly, crushing him. "I'm sorry," he choked. Sora could feel Riku's hands clutching spasmodically at his back. "I'm sorry I betrayed you. I'm sorry I didn't trust you and I'm sorry I called this place a stupid rock and said I didn't care if I never saw it again. I'm sorry I let the Darkness in. I'm sorry I always thought I was better than you. I'm sorry I was so jealous, Sora, I'm sorry I made you struggle and I never told you that you were my best friend. I'm sorry I took the Keyblade and left you with that old practice sword. I'm sorry I left you. I'm sorry…"

Sora reached for the Kingdom Key, because it was closest to him. He shook it out as Riku shook against him. Lifting it, he rapped Riku solidly on the back of the head. "Hey," he said as Riku pulled back, rubbing his head where Sora had hit him. "I'm sorry too. Or maybe I'm not. Maybe we're not supposed to be, Riku. Maybe everything was fate."

The arm around him relaxed from its frantic hold in slow incriments. "Yeah," Riku said eventually, slowly bringing his other hand back down. "Maybe it was."

"It doesn't matter anymore," Sora said. He put the Keyblade away and squeezed Riku briefly. "Everything is all right now."

"Yeah," Riku agreed, squeezing him back. After a moment, Riku spoke, his words ruffling the hair over Sora's ear. "Hey, Sora?"

"Yeah, Riku?"

"This is really gay, isn't it?"

Sora smiled against Riku's shoulder. "I guess it is."

He felt Riku's laugh before he heard it, a silent shaking as Riku tried valiantly to hold it in. It emerged in a quick burst as it always did, as though Riku was surprised to be laughing. Sora couldn't resist joining him and for some reason, it made Riku laughed harder. And Riku's belly laughs were always so funny that Sora laughed harder, too, trying to hold his sides and still hold onto Riku and Riku positively howled, trying frantically to muffle it against Sora's shoulder because he wasn't letting go either.

They wound down, stray snorts and chuckles escaping until Sora realized that Riku's laughter had turned into giggles, that Riku was giggling, and they ended up collapsing across Sora's bed because it was impossible to laugh that hard and still be able to stand. They lay there for a while, tangled up together, trying to catch their breath and calm down.

Which was when Riku suddenly said, "This is even gayer," and they laughed until both their faces were covered with tears and every muscle Sora owned ached from it.

A yawn interrupted his gasping sometime later and when it did Sora heard the chiming of the big, grandfather clock downstairs. "It's late," he said to Riku, who was laying heavily against him.

"Uh-huh," Riku agreed around a yawn of his own. "I'm going to go home and get some sleep," he said, pushing up.

Sora flopped over, his body protesting happily. "You wanna stay over?" he swallowed another yawn. "We might both still fit," he offered, trying to draw his blankets up with his feet.

"Nah," Riku shook his head, climbing up on to Sora's desk. "My parents'll kill me if they wake up and find me gone again." He slid out the window. "'Night, Sora," he said, sticking his head back in.

"G'Night, Riku," Sora returned, snuggling into his pillow as his friend dropped out of sight. He closed his eyes and could hear Riku dropping to the ground outside, heading back home again.
