The Train Home

They still ride the train home in the same direction, the way that they have always done, it's just that they very rarely go home at the same time anymore. But when they go home at the same time it is as though the years fall away and they're thirteen, fourteen years old again. The train swaying and they swaying with it.

When Nino has a new game Aiba holds the post with both hands and Nino leans back in the cage of his arms, his back warm to Aiba's chest. But mostly they both hold the post, Nino's back warm to Aiba's chest, and sway with the train and look out at the world as it flashes by in splashes of colored lights and gray-and-sand buildings. There's a girl at one of the stops and she is melancholy and beautiful.

Aiba watches Nino daydream about the girl and loves them both with the depths of his soul.

The girl stays on the platform and the train moves on. Nino is warm in Aiba's arms, warm right over his heart. Aiba closes his eyes as the train sways, swaying them with it, taking them home again.
