So this is a follow up to Getting Inside a fic for the October 4th challenge (why do you sleep with girls) at
31_days. It's AU month AND a direct continuation...so I'm afraid you'll have to click the link in order to understand what's behind the cut. I was still quite sick on the eighth, so I didn't get this up in time...but this IS the fic I wanted to post for October 6th (Late night Betty). Oh, and Kurogane swears. Be on the look out for a four letter word that's a crude way of talking about marital (or non-marital) relations, a deity doing the opposite of a blessing, and a three letter word that is slang for a person's hind end. ~.^
Kurogane plodded along, idly kicking a stone and wishing, just as idly, that it was Fai’s head. He slid a sideward glance at his best friend and just as quickly slid it away again. Fai was walking beside him, not too closely, with his arms folded behind his head. Silent.
“…and I just don’t get it, To-ya,” Yukito was saying ahead of them.
Kurogane’s eyes played kiss and chase with Fai’s profile again as Touya sighed. “All right; as long as you’re prepared for another late night, Betty.”
“When am I not?” Yukito asked and Kurogane couldn’t look anymore as Yukito snuggled into Touya’s side.
His eyes landed on the boys walking down one of the side streets. Doumeki and Watanuki. Holding hands. He rolled his eyes. Christ, the whole school is gay, he thought fatalistically. “Whatever,” he announced as they came to corner where their paths diverged. “Don’t wear yourself out studying, Kinomoto. Unless you’re canceling soccer.”
“Six sharp and don’t be late,” Touya assured him, cheerfully flipping him the bird.
Kurogane returned the it with a companionably rude gesture of his own and started walking. Three steps later he reached back and grabbed the hood of Fai’s sweatshirt without even looking. The slight choking sound that preceded the shift of weight did his heart good. “Where the hell were you going?”
“Home.”
“For a late night Betty? Which, may I remind you, is just an excuse for a night full of canoodling after an hour or two of studying?”
“I know what it is,” Fai said, his normally cheerful voice sounding both subdued and irritated.
Well, good. “So then you might remember that you spend Betties at my house?”
“Maybe I didn’t feel like it this time.”
“Maybe my ass, Fai. You just don't want to be at my house.” Which had never happened before. Not even after his ninja-self had torn open a two inch gash in wizard-Fai's arm. Not even the time when his mom had flipped out over Princess Tomoyo being held prisoner in the ice-tower of Celes and yelled at them for over an hour. "Or with me." He crammed his hands into his pockets and stopped, waiting for Fai to stop as well. It took a while and when he did stop, he didn’t turn to face him. “Fuck, Fai. You weren’t like this when you first told me. All,” he waved his hands at the space between them, knowing that the Fai who was his best friend would know he was doing it without even looking, “whatever,” he finished. “What gives?”
Five or ten steps ahead of him, Fai’s shoulders set. “When I first told you, you said ‘whatever’.” Kurogane had to grin. Fai did a great impression of him. “And you just kept walking. It was cool. But then you figured out what I meant and it got weird, okay. You freaked.”
“That’s insulting,” Kurogane said. “I did not freak. I made you throw a frog eye across the room and landed us both in detention. That’s standard operating procedures. Only you didn't talk our way out of it.”
Fai finally turned. “You know what I mean, Kurogane.”
And, truthfully, he did. “All right,” he sighed. “All right, but what do you want? I keep worrying that I’m going to say something or do something and wreck something, somewhere. It’s hard to know anything when Fai-my-best-friend-since-we-were-six will hardly look at me and Fai-the-guy-who-likes-me won’t look at me at all. It's been goddamned months. What do you want me to do?”
“I don’t want you to do anything,” Fai said and as Kurogane looked at him, caught his eyes; he realized that maybe Fai not looking at him had been a better deal than he’d thought. “I told you because I did. I didn’t want there to be secrets. I told you that you didn’t have to do anything. Or say anything. Or be anything. I just told you to tell you.”
“Maybe you shouldn’t have said anything,” he muttered, looking away, looking down. He fancied that he could feel Fai beginning to walk away more than he heard it and he jogged the few steps between them until he caught up. The space between them was huge, even though they were walking close enough that their arms brushed together the way that they always had. “I’m…I’m still thinking,” he said quietly as they reached the door to his building. He felt lame and stupid and unsure.
“Maybe you shouldn’t,” Fai said just as quietly.
Kurogane opened the security door and headed for the elevator. “If that’s the case, we’re screwed.”
EDIT: Freaking story is becoming a series. The next part is here and the theme of the day is 'I know how furiously your heart is beating'. Mind the warnings.
