If you ever tell me that you are 'trying to die' and that you have 'OD'd on a bunch of pain pills', I will call the cops so fast that they will be at your door before you can reconsider and make yourself throw up.

I will not wait three days to see if you are Jesus fucking Christ and going to be rising anytime soon.

I will CALL THE COPS ON YOUR ASS.

If I don't know where you live, I will contact everybody on your flist until I find somebody who does.

If I don't speak the language of the country you are in, I will find somebody who can teach me to ask for somebody who speaks English and I will have the cops at your door ASAP.

And I will not let you make it my fault if you get in trouble for the cops showing up at your door. If you don't want cops checking up on you, don't tell me you want to die and have a plan and are enacting that plan. I promise you: I WILL CALL THE GODDAMNED COPS WITHOUT CONTACTING YOU FIRST. You might be second but the cops will be first.

(Ed has a friend who just pulled this. Ed waited a few days because 'well, it's happened before only not with the OD'ing and usually I get a call and I'm really worried'. So I called the cops. And guess who is yelling at Ed? Yeaaaaah. I'm going to fly to Cali and pimpslap somebody.)

I am sorry to hear that aquaintances of yours think impending suicide is a matter that can be left alone. At least now they know that if they want to commit suicide without intervention, you won't be notified? (I hope?)

I realize this is a touchy topic. It's just-- this exact situation happened to my friend and I recently, and... well, it was really bad. Nobody died, bless their souls, and the yelling wasn't nearly so loud, but it was still really bad.

You are a good friend. And I completely support you in this. I've dealt with this subject recently in my life, both personal and professional, so I know this is not a subject to be wishy-washy on. I hope everything goes well for the both of you, as well as Ed's friend.

Agreed. I have been through to many actual suicides in my life to have any tolerance for suicide threats. It's not funny, it's not a good way to get attention, it's not a solution. Be angry at me all you want, but next time tell it to someone who doesn't care. Because someone who doesn't care won't act.

I am so sorry you and Ed have had to go through this, both the suicide drama and the behavior after DDD: To say something so horrifying, which could so devastate your friends (much less going through with it) and to expect no repercussions? If you make that public, you no longer have control over what happens next--other people will react (if a) they care and b) they think there is even a chance the threat is plausible, because god, who wants to think it wasn't and be wrong?), and when they react, they may not do so in the way you want.

one of my friends has in fact saved someone's life because of her similar policy to yours, so i'm all for it.
