Huzzah! I forgot that one or two of my themes were on Farmer, rather than on (the network shunning) Yellow! This one was writting for the [livejournal.com profile] 30_kisses theme #5--"ano sa" ("hey, you know....")

NOTE: This story also directly follows Red. As in, this is a direct continuation of that fic. I had meant to post them together, originally but didn't and then Yellow flaked out.

Disclaimer: You've got to know this one by now. If you're here, you must know CLAMP.

Dedication: To Chelle-sama, as always, and to Meg (for Jeffrey)

Ano-sa (hey, you know...)

There was something about Fai that Kurogane liked. Underneath the glib, silly, hyperactive exterior, there was something about Fai’s basic self that Kurogane genuinely liked; though he didn’t often get a chance to explore it, Kurogane mused watching Fai out of the corner of his eye. They were rarely on their own together and, when they were, Fai was rarely quiet.

He turned his head to look at his companion more fully. The head full of fly-away blond hair was tipped back against the wall they were sitting under. His face, nearly as delicate as a girl’s and with big blue eyes that girls usually wished for (in one form or another), was alive with mirth. Even as he watched, Fai tossed another cherry, whole, into his mouth and proceeded to choke. He reached out and pounded him on the back, noting again the strength in the slight form. He smiled because he couldn’t help it. “You eat it in two bites,” he said.

“That’s how Kuro-mi eats a cherry,” Fai said, and Kurogane could have sworn that Fai was blushing even if he couldn’t figure out why that would be. “I can get the stone separate from the rest of the cherry, I just can’t get it out because the rest of the cherry is in the way and I don’t want to spit that part out.”

Kurogane handed him another cherry out of the bag, idly noting that that it was still half full. “If you don’t eat it in two bites, you’re going to kill yourself choking on the stones.”

Fai shook his head, grinning. “No I won’t. You’ll save me. Besides, I’ll get it eventually, it probably just takes practice.”

Practice…that reminded him of something. “Hey, you know…” Kurogane started and then stopped.

“Hey, you know…what?” Fai sat forward, planting his elbows on his knees and his chin on his hands, smiling, waiting patiently.

In his head, Kurogane could hear the echoes of the awkward, gangling years of growing up. The kids in the market square, the older youths of the royal court… In his language the words were ‘ano-sa’ but it meant the same. A tentative contact, a reaching out...Hey, you know that song you liked…Hey, you know those noodles you were fond of…Hey, you know that lake that you showed me…Hey, you know …you know…do you know…don’t you know…

Fai nudged his shoulder with his own. “Tell me.”

…Mochiron. “No. Watch,” Kurogane said and, feeling both stupid and boastful, he slipped a cherry stem into his mouth and withdrew it a moment later tied in a neat knot.

“Amazing,” Fai clapped, laughing again. “Will you teach me how to do that?”

Kurogane looked at the remaining cherries doubtfully and then back at Fai, whose eyes were dancing. “More like ‘can’ I.” he rephrased.

“Of course you can! I have great confidence in you. Besides, I bought a lot of cherries and we have plenty of time.”

The sun was setting, but it was still high enough to kiss the tips of the long grass with gold. He handed Fai a cherry. “Eat it normally,” he instructed. “And then put the stem in your mouth.”

Fai dutifully bit the cherry in half and flicked the stone onto the ground with a finger, licking the juice off before eating the rest of the cherry and popping the stem into his mouth. Kurogane ate his own cherry and watched Fai's face twist with effort. A second later, Fai spit out a perfect pretzle knot. “That was easy,” Fai said cheerfully.

Kurogane examined the stem carefully. “You bit it,” he observed. “That’s cheating.”

“Aaa?”

“You’re only supposed to use your tongue to tie it. Biting is cheating.” He handed Fai his cherry stem. “Try it again.”

For a good five minutes Fai made a variety of interesting faces, head tilting this way and that, before he finally spit out the stem—-entirely straight. “Maybe not so easy,” he laughed.

Kurogane shrugged and produced another knot. “No. It took me forever to learn.”

“Hey, you know what? This can be our special project. When we don’t have better things to do you can teach me the cherry trick.”

Ano-sa… “I suppose…if we’ve got nothing better to do…mochiron.
