Despite the tree-car, we came in second.

Had some seriously high winds up here on Wednesday, into Thursday. Were without power for a day. Trees down all over. One on car! (Thankfully, it didn't hit Ed's, which was right next to it). The kids took the pictures to school but as their friend Andrew had a tree IN HIS ROOM, they did not win the unofficial 'my damage is cooler than your damage' contest. Spent much of the last few days moving tree parts, sweeping up glass, getting the van taken for more glass (won't be done for a week, they're looking for 'used' glass) and working.
Thankfully the damage to the van is the dented roof, the rear side window and the rear windshield. It'll cost but it won't eat up all of our emergency funds. Getting the trees topped/taken down to stumps will probably do that! Beats them falling on the house, though.

shoneenclub is having another contest (their traditional June contest, but late!) I shall be submitting!
All I Ever Wanted
YOU KNOW YOU WANT TO, TOO.
To convince you because I like to package my pimps with fic, I give you...
Pack up the moon, dismantle the sun
Jun's girlfriend breaks up with him in the middle of a small party at his place. It's public and everybody sees. Jun's not sure what's more humiliating—the fact that she did it in front of everybody or the fact that he's dated a girl who would do that in front of everybody.
But Jun has good friends—they scatter as soon as it's polite to do so after witnessing 'the event'. Shun fist-bumps him, as close to a hug as he will get in such circumstances, and leaves. The very last one out the door. Jun takes a long look around his apartment—it looks like a party abandoned in mid-motion, like something that's just plain over.
He needs to clean up but he ignores it and walks out on to his balcony instead, into the cool late-night, early-morning air. The city is spread out around him a mixture of lights and buildings and trees, all of it shining under the orange-haze, big-city sky.
Something glows cherry red at his side. "Sometimes it happens, na?" Nino says companionably.
Jun holds out his hand for the cigarette. "Guess so," he says, taking a drag. It's one of his own and he smiles out at the night. "Despite that," he says softly, handing the cigarette back to Nino, "I think I'll miss her. For a little while."
"Mm," Nino hums agreement and drops the cigarette over the edge. It glows for a while and goes out before it hits the ground.
It's meaningful, somehow, but Jun is mostly just tired. "Going home?" he asks Nino as he goes back inside, Nino at his back.
"Staying," Nino declares.
And Jun ignores the mess in his apartment to curl up under the sheets with Nino, like they're thirteen, like they're sixteen, like they're twenty, all over again. "Thanks," he mumbles as he drifts away.
Nino's hand finds his arm and pats. "G'night."

Date: 2011-06-11 02:01 am (UTC)I think people too often forget just how much those two care about each other. I see so many fic out there that paints them as rivals and it never sits right with me. I mean, sure, they're competitive boys, but it's when people forget the friendship behind all of it that it really starts to bother me. Anyway, rambling aside, this was perfect. Thank you. ♥

Date: 2011-06-11 03:25 am (UTC)I'll PM you my update as of this afternoon ^^;
Also--TREE ON VAN DDD:
That really blows >_< and you don't even get top bragging rights. No justice in this world, I tell you D:<
Did I tell you a tree fell on the Boy's car, too? $4000 :P At least it's the landlords' insurance that has to take care of it, but ugh.
But at least everyone is ok. Falling trees are really dangerous. I'm glad you're all ok even though I know this was unwelcome.
*hugs*

Date: 2011-06-12 12:12 am (UTC)Also, regarding the song: When I was downloading it, my sister came in and I told her 'just a sec, downloading a song' and when she asked which one I did the strum and she said 'You found Bill and Ted's song'. It was an amazing moment of lame being cool.
Re: Tree. We consider ourselves pretty lucky. The damage is only going to run of 550. It's not going to look pretty but it'll run and have windows. We're lucky it fell on the back of the car. Though, Chelle was right. The dent DID make a nice birdbath.

Date: 2011-06-11 06:29 am (UTC)Uhh, let's see. I think I'll start with the cigarette. My god, I can't even really speak to how incredible that image is. It's one of Jun's cigarettes, but Nino's the one that lights it and then they share it. There's just this atmosphere of old, old, old friends that goes with that. I'm not even sure I can articulate correctly what an intimate but simple image it is for me, it's just perfect.
And I think that's about right for the rest of it. The entire piece, the entire situation, is rather uncomplicated. It's subtle and it's a lot of the unspoken but it's what fits together and how things work. Jun and Nino are good friends, they have known one another for more than half of their lives now. Jun is a private person, is humiliated by the public break up, and yet is comforted by not having to be left alone with the aftermath of the party. And Nino is the friend that understands that, the one that doesn't even like to go to parties but is going to spend the night because what happened was fucked up and it's as simple as that.
♥ When I grow up I want to learn to write like you.
